Medical Mission 2004 Report & Pictures

THE MISSION
  • Medical professionals from the Upper Midwest have again united for a mission of healing and hope.
  • In January of 2006 a Team of 55 health care professionals will volunteer their time and medical skills to offer free medical, surgical and dental care to the people of Tanzania East Africa.
THE VOLUNTEERS
  • This will be the second medical mission to Tanzania for 21 veterans of the 2004 Medical Mission.
  • This core of 21 members represents a seasoned team of international medical volunteers.
  • All volunteer members are personally responsible for their expenses for the trip.
  • Members of this team have provided modern treatment to thousands of needy children and adults in Central America over the past 15 years.
  • Each volunteer is responsible to work as a team, in gathering all of the equipment, supplies, and medications.  Everything from a band-aide to an anesthesia machine is needed.
2004 MEDICAL TEAM
  • In April 2004 a small team of 24 volunteers traveled to Iambi Hospital in Nkungi Tanzania.  Doctor Dennis Lofstrom and his wife Paula conceived the original Iambi Hospital. The 2004 mission was the team’s first work in Tanzania. This mission was an outstanding success.  The warmth and gratitude expressed and shown by the people touched the very heart and soul of those who volunteered.
  • 21 of the original 24 volunteers are returning in 2006!
THE ORGANIZERS
  • Sharon Kramer RN, Sharon Manion RN, and Dr Paul Milloy who reside in the Brainerd Minnesota area are the Outreach Medical Team organizers.
  • Collectively the organizers have participated in over 40 previous overseas medical missions.
  • The Organizers facilitate the collection of all materials, equipment, and supplies, which will be required for its mission.
  • The task of organizing the travel, accommodations, food and water, coupled with the medical necessities is a monumental task. The Organizers years of experience has created the knowledge of the “how” and the “what” that is required for a successful mission.
  • When the Team has traveled 12,000 miles from their home to a remote location in Tanzania everything needed to provide medical, surgical and dental care must be readily available.

THE PARTNERS
  • Outreach Africa and its Tanzanian affiliate IREDO (Iramba Regional Development Organization) are proud to be partners in this 2006 mission of healing and hope. The medications, equipment, and supplies are being staged for shipment at the Outreach warehouse in Union, Iowa.   Outreach will load a 40’ ocean container with these materials, which will be shipped to Tanzania in August.  This container will transport all of the supplies required for the January mission.
  • IREDO was organized in 2004 and provides in-country administration and implementation of the Outreach programs. IREDO Directors are Dr Menerad Rwezaura and Dr Mike Kitwaka.
  • IREDO will arrange Government documentation, customs clearance, and transport of the contents of the ocean container from the port of entry to Singida Town.
  • Dr Rwezaura and DR Kitwaka reside in Tanzania and provide the critical links required for the success of the 2006 Outreach Medical Mission.
THE LOCATIONS
  • The team has accepted an invitation to work at the Government Hospital in Singida Town. This location will provide ample facilities for the team of 55 to work. This area serves a population of 200,000.
  • Dr. Matiku Renatus Nyakarungu MD MPH, is the Regional Medical Officer and Doctor in Charge of the Government Hospital located in Singida Town. Dr Nyakarungu in cooperation with Dr Rwezaura and Dr Kitwaka will provide the logistical support, facility planning and in-country organization for the mission.
  • A small “Outreach Team” will accompany Dr Rwezaura into remote villages to run “bush” clinics.
  • The team plans to gift equipment and supplies to the Iambi Lutheran Hospital and the Makiungu Catholic Hospital at the close of the mission.
NEXT YEAR
  • The Outreach Medical Team has begun its plans for the 2007 mission. Tanzania 2007 will be a wonderful experience for those of you who choose to join. Please contact the Team Organizers or Outreach with any questions or comments regarding the 2006 or 2007 missions. We welcome your support and participation.
